Thoughtful planning means your grandparents, parents or less mobile guests can share every moment of your destination wedding in comfort.
Some of the guests you most want beside you on your wedding day may also be the ones you worry about most when it comes to travel, heat and long days on their feet. The good news is that with a little forethought, a wedding abroad can be just as comfortable and joyful for grandparents, parents or guests with mobility needs as it is for everyone else.
Choosing a venue with ease of movement in mind
The single biggest factor in guest comfort is the venue itself. When we plan weddings in Cyprus, we look closely at step-free access, the distance between the ceremony and reception spaces, and whether there is shade and seating along the way. Many of our favourite venues have level paths, lifts where needed, and terraces that can be reached without navigating steps or gravel. If a guest uses a wheelchair, walking stick or simply tires easily, we will talk this through with you early so we can recommend places that genuinely work, rather than ones that merely look right in photographs.
It is also worth thinking about the flow of the day. A ceremony on a clifftop may be breathtaking, but if the reception is a ten-minute walk downhill, older guests may need transport laid on for that short stretch, or seating arranged at intervals so they can rest. Small details like this make a real difference and are easy to plan for once we know who will be attending.
Thinking carefully about timing and heat
Cyprus enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year, which is a wonderful backdrop for a wedding but does mean the heat needs managing sensibly, particularly for guests who feel it more keenly. Scheduling the ceremony for late afternoon rather than midday, ensuring there is shade near the seating area, and having water and fans readily available all help enormously. Many couples also choose a spring or autumn date, when temperatures are gentler but the weather remains reliably warm and settled — something we can advise on based on the specific month and region.
If your celebration involves any outdoor drinks reception before the meal, a shaded lounge area with proper seating (rather than standing space only) allows older guests to enjoy the atmosphere without feeling they need to retreat indoors.
Making travel and airports less daunting
For many families, the journey itself is the part that causes the most worry, not the wedding day. Airports can involve long walks, and connecting flights add complexity for anyone with limited mobility. Where possible, we suggest direct flights and airports with good assistance services, and we are happy to advise on requesting wheelchair support or priority boarding in advance, which most airlines offer without difficulty when booked ahead.
On arrival, transfers matter too. A private or shared transfer that takes guests directly from the airport to their accommodation, without lengthy waits or multiple changes, removes a great deal of stress from the start of the trip. This is one of the areas where having a dedicated on-island team, as we do in Cyprus, proves particularly useful — someone is on hand locally to meet guests, answer questions and smooth over anything unexpected.
Choosing accommodation with comfort in mind
Not every guest wants, or is able to manage, a boutique hotel with charming but narrow staircases. When we handle guest accommodation as part of your planning, we make a point of finding options with lifts, ground-floor rooms, and bathrooms suited to those with mobility needs, alongside the livelier hotels your younger guests might prefer. Keeping older guests reasonably close to the main wedding venue, rather than at the far end of a resort, also means less walking and fewer taxis on the day itself.
It is worth asking guests directly, ideally through a simple note included with travel information, whether they have any specific requirements. People are often quietly grateful to be asked, and it allows us to make sure nothing is overlooked.
Small touches that make a big difference
On the day, a few thoughtful gestures go a long way: reserved seating near the front with easy access, a shaded spot rather than full sun, a stocked table with water and perhaps reading glasses or fans, and a quiet corner where anyone can step away from the music if needed. None of this requires a large budget, only attention to who will be there and what would help them most.
We have found that couples who plan with these guests in mind rarely regret it, and the guests themselves often say afterwards how touched they were to be considered. A destination wedding does not need to exclude anyone from the celebration; it simply needs a little extra care in the planning.
