How Far in Advance Should You Book a Wedding Abroad?

The right booking window makes all the difference to your choice of venue, dates and peace of mind — here's how to plan the timing.

There is no single "right" answer to this question, but there is a sensible window that gives you the best choice of dates, the calmest run-up, and the happiest guests. Let us walk you through how we advise couples to think about timing, and why a little earlier is almost always better than a little later. The general rule of thumb For most couples marrying abroad, we recommend booking twelve to eighteen months ahead. This gives you first pick of your preferred venue and date, particularly if you have your heart set on a popular month such as May, June or September. It also allows plenty of time to plan thoughtfully rather than in a rush — choosing your ceremony style, working through legal paperwork, and giving guests fair notice to arrange time off work and save for their trip. That said, we have planned beautiful weddings with as little as six months' notice, and equally worked with couples who booked two years out because they wanted a particular venue or date, such as a wedding anniversary or a quieter shoulder-season week. The right timeline depends on your destination, your guest list, and how flexible you are able to be. Why earlier bookings give you more choice The most popular venues, particularly small boutique hotels and characterful beach or clifftop settings, only hold so many wedding dates each year. In Cyprus, for example, the warmest, most reliable months tend to book up first, simply because the island enjoys over 300 days of sunshine annually and couples understandably gravitate towards the same handful of favourite weeks. If you have a specific venue in mind, or you are set on a particular season, booking early is the single best way to protect that choice. Earlier booking also gives you room to negotiate accommodation for your guests. Popular resorts have a limited number of rooms, and if you are hoping to house thirty, fifty or eighty guests under one roof, or across a small cluster of nearby hotels, that becomes much easier to arrange with plenty of lead time. This is one of the reasons our own planning process begins with accommodation and guest logistics almost as early as the venue conversation itself — the two are closely linked. What legal and administrative timelines mean for your booking Getting married abroad involves paperwork, and the exact requirements vary by country and even by municipality. Rather than rely on general guidance you may have read elsewhere, we confirm the current documentation and any residency or notice requirements in writing with the couple's chosen municipality once your date is set. This matters because requirements can and do change, and what applied to a friend's wedding two years ago may not apply to yours today. Practically speaking, this means it is wise to have your destination and rough date agreed at least eight to ten months before the day, simply to allow comfortable time for documents such as birth certificates, any translations, or apostille stamps to be gathered without last-minute stress. Booking well ahead of this window gives you a much calmer runway rather than working backwards from a fixed date under pressure. Considering your guests' plans A wedding abroad asks more of your guests than a wedding at home — flights, accommodation, and often several days away from work. The earlier you can confirm your date and destination, the more chance your loved ones have to plan properly, book affordable flights, and budget for the trip without financial strain. As a general guide, giving guests nine to twelve months' notice from save-the-date to wedding day is considerate and realistic, particularly for family members travelling with children or those who need to request annual leave well ahead of time. If your guest list includes older relatives or anyone who might need extra planning time, building in a longer runway is a kind and thoughtful gesture, even if the venue itself could be secured more quickly. When a shorter timeline still works beautifully None of this is to say a wedding abroad cannot come together on a shorter timeline. We have planned weddings within six to nine months for couples who wanted something intimate, who were flexible on exact dates, or who simply knew what they wanted quickly. Cyprus in particular lends itself well to a slightly shorter runway, thanks to our dedicated on-island team who manage the details locally and can move things along efficiently once your key decisions are made. If your date is flexible, or you are drawn to a quieter month such as late autumn or early spring, you may also find more availability at shorter notice, along with the added benefit of a less crowded venue and generally kinder pricing. Finding the right timeline for you The honest answer is that the best time to book is whenever you feel ready to start the conversation. Whether that is two years before your wedding or eight months, what matters most is having a clear picture of your priorities — venue, guest numbers, season, and budget — so we can help you find a date and destination that genuinely works. Across all our destinations, published packages run from £4,999 to £12,995, while in Cyprus, our flagship destination, packages run from £9,500 to £10,900, reflecting the exceptional value the island offers alongside full planning support, guest accommodation coordination and on-the-ground concierge care throughout your stay. If you are beginning to think about a wedding abroad, however near or far your date might be, we would love to talk it through with you.
