Travelling with Children to a Destination Wedding

From flights to flower girls, here's how to plan a destination wedding that works beautifully for guests of every age.

Some of the loveliest destination weddings we have helped plan have been full of children — flower girls chasing bubbles across a terrace, small pageboys fast asleep in someone's arms by the time the dancing starts. Bringing children along does mean a little extra thought, but it needn't complicate things. With some early planning, it can make the whole occasion warmer. Choosing the right time of year If you are marrying in Cyprus, you have the advantage of over 300 days of sunshine a year, which gives you real flexibility. Late spring (May) and early autumn (September, early October) tend to suit families particularly well — warm enough for the pool and the beach, without the more intense heat of July and August, which can be tiring for young children and babies. If your wedding falls during the school summer holidays, that's not a problem either, but do factor in shade, hydration and a slower pace for the day itself. Flights, transfers and jet lag Cyprus, along with our other destinations in Greece, Malta, Spain and Italy, is reachable on relatively short direct flights from the UK and Ireland, typically between three and five hours depending on where you fly from. This makes a real difference with children, as there's no jet lag to contend with and even a fractious flight is over reasonably quickly. When you book through us, we can help coordinate group flight times so that families travelling together arrive within a similar window, which makes transfers simpler and means less waiting around at the airport with tired children in tow. Once you land, a private transfer rather than a shared coach is often worth the small extra thought, particularly for families with very young children or those needing a car seat. We arrange this as part of your guest concierge service, so it's one less thing for you or your guests to organise from home. Accommodation that works for families Where your guests stay matters more than most couples realise until they start planning. Look for a resort or villa complex with interconnecting or nearby rooms, a shallow pool or paddling area, and ideally some form of kids' club or evening babysitting service, even if it only runs a few hours in the early evening. This gives parents the chance to enjoy your speeches and the first part of the evening without little ones needing to be constantly minded. We handle guest accommodation as part of the full planning service, and we always ask early on whether you're expecting children, so we can put forward properties that genuinely suit a mixed-age group rather than simply the most romantic-looking option. Grandparents travelling too are worth thinking about in the same conversation, as their needs — proximity to the ceremony, lift access, a quieter room away from the pool bar — are just as practical a consideration. Planning the ceremony and reception around little ones A shorter ceremony, or one with a clear, simple structure, tends to hold children's attention better than a long, formal service, and most celebrants abroad are used to working with couples on this. Consider the time of day too — a late afternoon ceremony followed by an early evening reception often suits families better than a very late start, as it means younger children can be part of the earlier celebrations before bedtime, rather than the whole day tipping past their limits. For the reception itself, small touches go a long way: a low children's table with colouring or simple activities, a slightly earlier children's meal sitting, and perhaps a quiet space nearby where a parent can settle a tired toddler without missing too much. None of this needs to be elaborate — just considered. If you would like some downtime for the adults later in the evening, many couples arrange a couple of hours of babysitting through the resort or a locally recommended childminding service, so that both parents can enjoy the dancing together. We can help arrange this locally as part of your concierge planning, working with venues we know well. A note on flower girls, pageboys and readings If children are taking part in the ceremony itself, keep their role short and well-rehearsed rather than relying on the day to go perfectly to plan. A brief walk down the aisle, a simple job like carrying rings on a cushion, or a very short reading suits most ages better than anything requiring them to stand still for long. A quick practice the day before, ideally at the actual venue, tends to settle nerves for children and parents alike. Bringing it all together Destination weddings and children are not mutually exclusive — quite the opposite. With the right time of year, sensible travel arrangements, family-friendly accommodation and a day structured with younger guests in mind, you can have both an elegant wedding and a genuinely relaxed one. Cyprus in particular offers excellent value for larger family groups travelling together, without compromising on the setting or the sunshine. If you are picturing a destination wedding with children very much part of the day, we would love to help you plan it.
