Thinking of combining your celebrations with your destination wedding? Here's how to plan a stag or hen do abroad without the stress.
There is something rather wonderful about the idea of your closest friends gathering on the same island where you will say your vows, extending the celebrations into a proper long weekend of fun. But combining a stag do or hen party with a destination wedding takes a little more thought than a big day at home, and getting the timing and logistics right makes all the difference to how relaxed everyone feels, including you.
Should you combine them or keep them separate
The first decision is whether your stag or hen do should happen in the same location as your wedding, and if so, whether it should run immediately before the wedding itself or as a separate trip weeks or months earlier.
Many couples now choose to hold traditional stag and hen celebrations at home in the UK or Ireland, in the months leading up to the wedding, and then treat the destination trip purely as the wedding itself. This keeps the two events distinct, gives your guests two separate reasons to celebrate, and means the run-up to your wedding is calmer rather than colliding with a heavy night out.
Others prefer to bring everything together abroad, arriving a few days early with the wedding party to enjoy a proper stag or hen celebration before the day itself. This works well if your guest list for the stag or hen is largely the same as your wedding guest list, and if you are all travelling out together as a group.
There is no right answer here, only what suits your friendship group, your budget, and how much time everyone can realistically take off work.
Timing it around the wedding itself
If you do decide to combine the celebrations, timing matters more than people expect. A heavy night on the town two days before your wedding rarely ends well for anyone, least of all the bride or groom. We generally suggest building in at least two to three clear days between any stag or hen festivities and the wedding ceremony itself, giving everyone time to recover, catch some sun by the pool, and arrive at the big day feeling their best rather than fragile.
If your wedding party is arriving a week or more ahead of other guests, which is common with Cyprus weddings given the excellent value of extending a stay, this earlier arrival window is often the ideal moment for the stag or hen celebration. It also means the smaller, closer group gets some dedicated time together before the wider guest list arrives.
Choosing a location that works for everyone
It is worth being honest about what your stag or hen party actually wants. A villa with a pool and a private chef, a boat trip along the coast, or an evening exploring a lively harbour town can all be arranged in Cyprus, Malta or along the Spanish coast without needing a separate destination entirely. Keeping the stag or hen in the same country as the wedding, even if not the exact same resort, tends to simplify travel considerably and often works out better value than flying everyone to a second location altogether.
Paphos and Ayia Napa in Cyprus, for example, offer rather different characters, one more relaxed and scenic, the other livelier after dark, so there is genuine flexibility to suit the tone your group is after, all within easy reach of your wedding venue.
Budgeting honestly with your wedding party
Stag and hen trips abroad are a real financial commitment for your friends and family, on top of the cost of attending the wedding itself. It is worth having an honest conversation early on, ideally through whoever is organising the stag or hen, about what people can comfortably afford. Some groups prefer a simple villa stay with meals cooked at home and one or two paid activities, while others want a full weekend of experiences. Neither is wrong, but clarity early prevents awkwardness later, particularly if some guests are already stretching to cover flights and accommodation for the wedding.
Keeping the organising manageable
Whoever takes charge of the stag or hen, whether that is a best friend, a sibling, or a small committee, will find things far easier if accommodation and transfers are sorted well in advance rather than left to chance once everyone lands. If your wedding planning is already being handled for you, it is worth asking whether guest accommodation for the wider trip, including any stag or hen stay, can be coordinated at the same time. This is something we do as a matter of course for our couples, arranging villas or hotel blocks that suit both the smaller stag or hen group and the wider wedding party, so nobody is juggling separate bookings or worrying about transfers between the two.
Letting go of the reins, just a little
Finally, if you are the bride or groom, this is one part of the trip you are allowed to hand over entirely. Trust your friends to plan something you will enjoy, give them a rough steer on budget and tone, and then let it be their gift to you rather than another item on your own to-do list.
